Valrhona

* * *

Eleven-year-old Valrhona—who is more commonly known by her nickname Moo—is a survivor of the 2010 and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. This brave little chocolate Burmese took shelter in her house as the earth shook and the world fell apart around her in that first terrifying quake, while her human family fled to safety. The next day, they returned, unsure of what had happened to their little Moo— and found her hidden in a washing basket in the laundry.

Since that first awful earthquake, Moo and her humans have moved home three times, and have been persistently troubled by aftershocks and devastating destruction. When the 22 February earthquake struck in 2011, Moo was frightened witless by the enormous rocks that began to rain down around her and her home. She disappeared, and her family didn’t find her again until the next day, this time inside the badly damaged house. She was sitting in her basket in a room that had a gaping hole in the exterior wall.

Moo had always been a nervous little cat, and unsurprisingly the stress of the earthquakes and their aftershocks has only amplified her qualms. She watches her humans closely, never leaving their side, and sleeps in bed with them every night. She retains her lovely, sweet nature, however, and enjoys her home comforts, always seeking out the sunniest spot and taking time to sit in the window and nosily spy on the neighbours.
